European frontend technical interviews

Frontend accessibility interview: review a booking form

For a frontend accessibility interview, explain how users identify controls, complete actions and recover from errors. W3C WAI's form guidance recommends properly associated labels. Apply that principle to the actual interface instead of reciting accessibility terms without demonstrating them.

Evaluate what a person can understand and operate

For a frontend accessibility interview, explain how users identify controls, complete actions and recover from errors. W3C WAI's form guidance recommends properly associated labels. Apply that principle to the actual interface instead of reciting accessibility terms without demonstrating them.

This original case is for frontend applicants to international teams in Europe. It is a technical practice exercise, not a legal compliance assessment or an accessibility certification. A short review cannot establish that an entire product conforms to a standard.

Review a form that relies on placeholders

A fictional appointment form has name and email inputs whose only visible descriptions are placeholders. The submit action is a clickable div. When submission fails, a red outline appears around one input but there is no explanation. Success replaces the form with a message elsewhere on the page.

Describe the problems you would investigate, a small improvement plan and how you would test it. Focus on control identification, keyboard operation, understanding the error and noticing the result. Do not assume that changing colours alone resolves all four.

Form review worksheet
Interface detailImprovement and verification
Placeholder-only inputAdd a persistent associated label and verify the control's accessible name.
Clickable divUse a suitable native button and test keyboard operation.
Unexplained red outlineDescribe the error in text and relate it to the affected input.
Result elsewhereCheck how the user notices the result and what happens to focus.

Explain a fix with the user's next action

An illustrative answer is: 'I would start with persistent labels associated with their inputs. A person should still know what the field means after typing. I would then use a button for submission and check the form using a keyboard. For the failed email field, I would provide a specific text explanation and verify that the user can return to it.' The explanation connects implementation to use.

Check the interface with appropriate assistive technology and inspect the resulting names and relationships. Automated tools can contribute findings, but avoid claiming a passed scan proves the whole form usable. Also test the error and success states, not only the initial display.

Follow-up questions to test your reasoning

  • What disappears when placeholder text is replaced by input?
  • Where should focus go after validation fails?
  • How would you test the changed form without a mouse?

Review whether each recommendation has a verification step. A checklist of attributes without a test can hide misunderstandings. If you are unsure how a particular browser and assistive technology combination behaves, say how you would verify it.

Run the form in its failure state

Build a small local version of the fictional form and trigger an invalid input. Explain the path from error message to correction and successful submission. Keep the exercise separate from any claim about the employer's production product.

This is an original Cluegent practice exercise. Its scenario, example wording and suggested timings are illustrative, not an employer's assessment or scoring system. Use genuine experience in a real interview.

For optional preparation, paste the exercise into Cluegent as a typed prompt and ask for one follow-up at a time. Review the reasoning before adopting suggested wording. Redact personal and employer-confidential information. Try Cluegent on Windows or macOS; check the current trial and paid terms before downloading. Follow the employer's rules during an actual assessment.

Frequently asked questions

Are placeholders enough to label form fields?

Use appropriately associated labels. Placeholder text is not a dependable replacement for a persistent field label.

Does passing an automated accessibility scan prove compliance?

No. Treat automated findings as part of a wider review that includes interaction and relevant assistive-technology testing.
