Ireland and UK graduate interviews

Graduate interview presentation: a practical slide plan

For a graduate interview presentation, start with the employer's brief: topic, audience, time, permitted materials and questions. gradireland distinguishes presentations prepared in advance from tasks given during an assessment. Ask which format applies instead of assuming you can bring a finished deck.

Build the presentation around the requested decision

For a graduate interview presentation, start with the employer's brief: topic, audience, time, permitted materials and questions. gradireland distinguishes presentations prepared in advance from tasks given during an assessment. Ask which format applies instead of assuming you can bring a finished deck.

This exercise is for Ireland and UK graduate applicants who need practice selecting evidence and defending a recommendation. The five-slide plan below is our suggestion, not a hiring rule. Adapt the structure to the actual brief and keep the decision clear.

Present a recommendation about campus appointments

Your fictional brief asks how a university careers office could reduce missed advice appointments. You have student comments about reminders, transport and confusing booking instructions, but no reliable count by cause. Present a pilot recommendation and explain what evidence you would collect.

Avoid turning every comment into a proven explanation. Separate what the brief states, what you infer and what you still need to learn. Prepare slides that support your spoken reasoning rather than reproduce it as dense paragraphs.

Suggested five-slide outline
SlidePurpose
1. RecommendationPropose a small reminder-and-booking pilot with a defined audience.
2. What we knowShow the comments and state their limitations.
3. OptionsCompare reminders, clearer instructions and scheduling changes.
4. PilotExplain the owner, scope and evidence collection.
5. Decision and questionsState what approval is needed and what would change the plan.

Use a cautious opening that still makes a decision

An illustrative opening is: 'I recommend piloting clearer booking instructions with appointment reminders. The comments point to possible communication problems, but they do not establish how common each cause is. The pilot lets us test a manageable change while collecting better evidence.' This gives a recommendation without presenting assumptions as findings.

During questions, explain why you did not immediately redesign the entire timetable. If asked how you would measure success, distinguish appointment attendance from whether students found the advice useful. You can propose measurements without inventing a baseline or claiming the pilot already worked.

Follow-up questions to test your reasoning

  • What if the main problem is transport rather than reminders?
  • Who would own the pilot?
  • Which slide could you remove if the time limit changed?

Practise once with the slides and once with only the headings. Record yourself if comfortable, then check pace and whether the conclusion is understandable. gradireland recommends practising presentation delivery; the exercise timings and fictional brief here are our own.

Prepare for questions, not only the speech

Ask a friend to interrupt with a challenge to your main assumption. Pause, acknowledge what is uncertain and return to the evidence. Bring any permitted backup format, but confirm the presentation setup with the recruiter before relying on a particular display or file type.

This is an original Cluegent practice exercise. Its scenario, example wording and suggested timings are illustrative, not an employer's assessment or scoring system. Use genuine experience in a real interview.

For optional preparation, paste the exercise into Cluegent as a typed prompt and ask for one follow-up at a time. Review the reasoning before adopting suggested wording. Redact personal and employer-confidential information. Try Cluegent on Windows or macOS; check the current trial and paid terms before downloading. Follow the employer's rules during an actual assessment.

Frequently asked questions

How many slides should a graduate interview presentation have?

Follow the employer's brief and time limit. Our five-slide example is a practice structure, not a required number.

Can I choose the topic myself?

Only if the brief allows it. Some employers set a topic in advance; others provide a task during the assessment.
