Make the decision criteria explicit
For a release manager interview, explain what evidence supports a release and which unresolved risks require a decision. A green dashboard does not automatically settle scope, recovery or ownership questions. Distinguish your recommendation from the authority that approves the release.
This original case is for release, delivery and platform applicants to European international teams. Its checklist is a suggested discussion aid, not an employer's release policy. Follow the organisation's actual controls in production.
Review a release with incomplete rollback evidence
A fictional release has passed the normal automated tests. One data migration remains untested against an older application version, and the rollback note says 'revert the deployment'. Support has not received the customer-facing change summary. A marketing announcement is scheduled for tomorrow.
Recommend whether to proceed, reduce scope or wait for specific evidence. Explain the significance of compatibility and data recovery separately from the announcement deadline. Identify who should approve any residual risk and who needs the final decision.
| Readiness area | Evidence or decision needed |
|---|---|
| Compatibility | Old and new version behaviour during the migration. |
| Recovery | What a code revert restores and what happens to changed data. |
| Support readiness | A clear change summary and escalation owner. |
| Residual risk | An authorised decision with the uncertainty recorded. |
| Monitoring | A post-release check and a trigger for intervention. |
Give a conditional recommendation
An illustrative answer is: 'I would not recommend the full release on the current evidence. The migration compatibility and recovery path are unresolved. I would ask whether the non-migration changes can be released independently, verify that smaller scope and obtain the appropriate approval. Otherwise I would wait for the missing checks.' This names the conditions instead of issuing an unsupported universal veto.
Explain how you would communicate the decision to engineering, support and the announcement owner. Record which risk was accepted, by whom and under what condition. Do not claim that removing a feature from the plan is safe until its dependencies are understood.
Follow-up questions to test your reasoning
- What evidence would change your recommendation?
- Who can accept the residual risk?
- What if the migration cannot be separated from the release?
Review the answer for a concrete next step. 'It depends' is accurate but incomplete if you do not say what it depends on. Connect each unresolved issue to an owner, a check or an approval decision.
Present the decision in a short status note
Write current recommendation, reasons, missing evidence and next review point. Ask a partner whether they know what must happen before release. Use the migration case to practise the technical explanation behind one of the readiness questions.
This is an original Cluegent practice exercise. Its scenario, example wording and suggested timings are illustrative, not an employer's assessment or scoring system. Use genuine experience in a real interview.
For optional preparation, paste the exercise into Cluegent as a typed prompt and ask for one follow-up at a time. Review the reasoning before adopting suggested wording. Cluegent supports permitted live workflows with transcript context, typed prompts, screenshot-aware answers, resume context, custom response behavior, quick action buttons, and a private desktop overlay. It is most useful when you already understand the subject and need help staying structured under pressure.
Frequently asked questions
What makes a useful go/no-go interview answer?
State the recommendation, supporting evidence, unresolved risks, decision authority and specific next checks.
Does a code revert always provide a rollback?
No. Data changes can require a separate recovery plan. Explain what the proposed rollback actually restores.
